Vines more than half a century old don't usually get spent on a grape as unsung as Auxerrois, and that's exactly why this bottle deserves a look. It's 100% Pinot Auxerrois from a 2.5-acre holding planted in 1959 and 1970, on granite and clay, and the Vieilles Vignes on the label means what it says. Jean-Baptiste Adam took over from his father, Jean-Marie, in 1996 and switched the vineyards to biodynamic farming. Every vine the estate owns or farms is now worked that way. The house picks everything by hand, ferments with the grapes' own yeasts, and keeps only the juice from the middle of the pressing, throwing out the first and last runs. Plenty of growers save that kind of care for their top bottles. Here it goes into an everyday Alsace white, which makes this one of the easier calls on the shelf. His daughter Laure is the 15th generation of the family in the business, so expect this to keep coming.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Mushroom tourte or a wild-mushroom tart, tarte flambée with onions and lardons, grilled chicken thighs or pork sausages off the barbecue, a classic quiche, or simply as an aperitif with gougères.

Tasting Profile

Expect the rounder, fuller side of Alsace's Pinot family: ripe yellow apple, pear, white flowers and a touch of almond, with a stony edge typical of granite soils. Think a slightly richer, softer Pinot Blanc, still backed by good acidity, finishing dry, supple and quietly savoury.
