The highest-altitude Premier Cru in Chassagne-Montrachet—almost more Puligny in style, with tension, lemony tang, and crushed-chalk minerality. La Grande Montagne's soils are mostly limestone with very little clay, and the elevation keeps things cool, bright, and focused. Thierry Pillot uses no new oak here (0%), letting the site speak without wood influence. Aged 12 months in 350-liter barrels, then six months in tank. The 2021 vintage—mineral and driving—is a natural fit for this vineyard's personality.

Thierry Pillot is killing it! He is a super-talented vigneron, and since he has taken over his family's domain the quality has gone through the roof. He is one of those rare characters who is equally good at making red and white wines.

They have 13 hectares of vines in the domaine, 1/3 red and 2/3 white. The whites are very concentrated because of the frost and the reds are supple and elegant, really classic. Like many young vignerons, Thierry has also set up a micro-negociant under his own name.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 90
"The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet La Grande Montagne 1er Cru has an atypical bouquet that seems cut from a completely different cloth to its peers. Initially, it is almost overpowering and muddled before cohering to reveal citronella, lime and creamy new oak mixed with acacia. The palate is showing a lot of wood at the moment. In some ways, it is quite seductive but it doesn't articulate the terroir as well as others in this flight and lacks some typicité on the finish. There was some speculation about minor TCA. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting." -Neal Martin

"There's one 350-liter barrel of the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Grand Montagne, a medium to full-bodied, pure and tensile wine evocative of pear, crisp green apple, white flowers and smoky reduction. With a satiny attack and chalky structuring extract, it remains very classical in profile despite the tiny yield." -William Kelley
