Domaine Paul Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet Les Mazures 2021 [NET]

$14499

A lieu-dit (named vineyard) just below the Premier Cru Champs-Gains—not classified Premier Cru itself, but benefiting from Pillot's Premier Cru-level attention. Les Mazures has deeper, more clayey soils marked by limestone, producing a village-level Chassagne with surprising depth. The 2021 vintage—mineral and racy—gives this site a taut, chiseled personality. Half-hectare parcel, 10% new oak, 350-liter barrels, 12 months in barrel, six months in tank.

"Moderate reduction overshadows everything save for an interesting whiff of the exotic. There is a lovely sense of verve if not quite the same density to the fleshy and delicious middleweight flavors that terminate in a sleek, bone-dry and clean finish that delivers fine length. Like the straight Chassagne villages, this too could use better depth but more should almost certainly develop if given a chance. "

"The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Masures has a fragrant and poised bouquet, quite mineral-driven, poised with lightly pressed, yellow flower scents. The palate is well balanced with a certain volume in the mouth; touches of orange rind and pear appear towards the lovely finish. Bon vin!" —Neal Martin

"Pillot's 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Mazures is excellent, unwinding in the glass with notes of lemon zest, tangerine, white flowers and youthful reduction. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and racy, with tangy acids and a chiseled, tensile profile, it concludes with a long, penetrating finish." —William Kelley

"With its lemony quince fruit aromas and floral notes and the combination of vibrant acidity and lean body on the palate, this wine is tightly wound and refreshing. The combination of intense aromas and concentration on the palate ensures that this wine will be refreshingly crisp from release and able to age as well. The grapes are from Les Masures, a top-notch source for village-level grapes located at the base of the slope under premier cru Champ Gains."

More about Domaine Paul Pillot

Thierry Pillot is killing it! He is a super-talented vigneron, and since he has taken over his family's domain the quality has gone through the roof. He is one of those rare characters who is equally good at making red and white wines.

They have 13 hectares of vines in the domaine, 1/3 red and 2/3 white. The whites are very concentrated because of the frost and the reds are supple and elegant, really classic. Like many young vignerons, Thierry has also set up a micro-negociant under his own name.
