Domaine Paul Pillot Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanee 2018 [NET]

$49499

La Romanée sits at the top of the Chassagne hillside, just below where Le Montrachet itself begins (the name, by the way, has nothing to do with the famous Romanée of Vosne). It is a tiny, sunny, light-and-pebbly site at high elevation, and for Thierry Pillot it is the prestige bottling of the domaine, drawn from very old vines and made for the long haul. The 2018 leans into the warm vintage with a full nose of citrus peel, white flowers and white chalk, then the palate is satiny and concentrated, evocative of pear, waxy citrus and pastry cream, with a tensile finish that demands patience. One of Chassagne's great whites, full stop.

"The naturally exotic aromas of spiced jasmine tea, pear and ripe white orchard fruit are laced with plenty of citrus elements. The suave, round and attractively textured middle weight flavors are not quite as concentrated, but they do offer more refinement, indeed the mouthfeel is silky on the sneaky long finish that is also shaped by lemon-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured but should amply repay mid-term cellaring."

"The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru has a nuanced nose with citrus peel, pressed white flowers, white chalk and a hint of orange blossom. Beautifully controlled, the oak is well integrated. The palate is well-defined with a subtle reduction on the entry, fine acidity, quite sappy and focused towards the tensile finish. Just a hint of grapefruit emerges on the lingering aftertaste. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting." —Neal Martin

"The most reserved of these three bottled premiers crus is the 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée, a medium to full-bodied, elegantly satiny wine evocative of pear, waxy citrus rind, fresh bread, pastry cream and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with lively acids and a penetrating finish, this will demand a little patience." —William Kelley

"If any of Thierry Pillot's Premiers Crus are of Grand Cru quality, this is it in most vintages, including 2018. Made from 70-year-old vines planted on soils that are stony and very poor, it's an intense, focused, chiselled wine with chalky, wet stone aromas, leesy concentration, stylish 12% new wood and a long, tangy, mouthwatering finish. Brilliant stuff from one of the best young winemakers in the Côte de Beaune. Drinking Window 2023 - 2035."

More about Domaine Paul Pillot

Thierry Pillot is killing it! He is a super-talented vigneron, and since he has taken over his family's domain the quality has gone through the roof. He is one of those rare characters who is equally good at making red and white wines.

They have 13 hectares of vines in the domaine, 1/3 red and 2/3 white. The whites are very concentrated because of the frost and the reds are supple and elegant, really classic. Like many young vignerons, Thierry has also set up a micro-negociant under his own name.
