The All Natural Innovations at The Marigny

The All Natural Innovations at The Marigny

The Marigny wines often start fresh and easy but will quickly evolve into something more complex and brooding in your glass. For old world drinkers, these would not be unfamiliar with their high acidity and restrained fruit but in a wholly unique sensory experience. These are wines that transcend the natural/conventional wine divide and are simply exceptional wines made by someone deeply dedicated to their craft.

Le Brun Servenay: Tradition, but with Quality

Le Brun Servenay: Tradition, but with Quality

Champagne has a long history of making some of the world’s greatest wines, and they have developed an amazing range of traditions that are worth preserving. And it is Patrick Le Brun’s mission to preserve them. His “Odalie” is a terrific, and affordable, example of Le Brun’s lifework.

Kante: Fabulous Friulians

Kante: Fabulous Friulians

Where are the best white wines of Italy produced? There are lots of regions vying for the title, but today we will focus in on one producer, Edi Kante, whose wines make the compelling case that it is Friuli that is king. It is rare to come across such unique wines – wines that we really consider “must tries” – for such reasonable prices:

Christina: Austrian Nature in the Glass

Christina: Austrian Nature in the Glass

The story of Christina is on the label. It represents the critters that happily cohabitate with Christina Netzl in her family vineyards. With the help of her mother and her best friend, Christina makes her wines using primitive cellar practices that would be familiar to the Romans who once occupied these lands.

Peter Lauer's Barrel X: Everybody's Favorite Riesling

Peter Lauer's Barrel X: Everybody's Favorite Riesling

We consider Peter Lauer's Barrel X to be a true wine staple. We need to have a bottle of it in our fridges, just like we need to have flour in our pantries. Dry-tasting (there is just enough residual sugar to balance out the natural acidity), it is, as Lauer's importer says, the "Platonic ideal of what a Saar Riesling should be”.

Peyrassol: The Spirit of Provence, and an Iconic Rosé

Peyrassol: The Spirit of Provence, and an Iconic Rosé

Nothing quite satisfies our seasonal wine itch for Provençal rosé like Peyrassol. Peyrassol has a thousand year history, dating back to the Knights of Templar. No, they did not produce rosé for crusaders, as pink wine of this sort is a far more recent invention. But the soils, the weather, the Provençal culture and cuisine have all united to make this domaine one of the few great producers of France to really specialize in rosé. We are lucky to get bottles every year, and this time it is just in time for some gorgeous weather.

A new vintage of Fratelli Alessandria's Pelaverga

A new vintage of Fratelli Alessandria's Pelaverga

Italy is home to an endless array of tasty, lesser-known varieties and one of our favorite Italian sleeper-grapes is a small red one from Piemonte known as Pelaverga. Since the 1870s, the Alessandrias have made their wines in Verduno focused on transcendent Barolis, but they take particular pride in their Pelavera, which they call Speziale, in reference to the gentle spicy notes the grape is known for.

2021 Domaine Lucien Crochet Sancerres

2021 Domaine Lucien Crochet Sancerres

How good are the wines of Domaine Lucien Crochet? When Eric Asimov did a Wines of the Times column on Sancerre a dozen years ago, Crochet's was his top pick. It even beat out the superstar Cotats. We think Crochet has only gone from strength to strength since then. Read on to learn about the latest duo of 2021 arrivals.

G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe 2018

G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe 2018

The Albe is made in an entirely traditional fashion, with aging exclusively in large Slavonian casks. The cooler high-altitude sites ensure that the wine stays bright and nimble, and fun to drink even on release. This is especially true of the precocious 2018. Vintage-in-vintage out, we love the value and consistency of Vajra's real deal Barolo Albe and we think you will to.
